In fact, because there is so much to experience, deciding on a good itinerary can be rather challenging. There are so many options that you could create several vacations, with exotic locations like Portugal, Spain, France and Italy to choose from. Here are some of the best places in the region to get the most out of your western Mediterranean cruises.

If you have wanted to visit the amazing French Riviera, then booking a cruise is probably the perfect way to do that. Be sure to go onshore at the town of Villefranche-sur-Mer and see the backdrops that inspired Picasso and Matisse. You can see the Notre-Dame-de-Guarde in Marseille, or what about a trip to Cannes where they hold the world-famous international film festival? Then of course there is the Old Town and the Opera House in Nice for your enjoyment. There is so much in this region to explore that it will be difficult to pull yourself away and experience the delights the other countries on your schedule can offer.

In sun-kissed Spain, one port you will most likely dock is at Barcelona. If you like architecture, you will be mesmerized by the amazing Gothic buildings and structures you will find here. Here is another place you can see the art of Pablo Picasso, in the Museu Picasso, where one of the world’s largest collections of his art are on display. Also, another cruise destination popular in Spain is Mallorca. This is the largest island in Spain, and it has the gigantic Palma Cathedral. If you were thinking of some relaxation under the hot Mediterranean sun, Mallorca has more than 70 amazing beaches to choose from.

If you make your way to Portugal, then you will want to stop in at Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal. It has sites for the enjoyment of the whole family. Take in the Belem Tower, Jeronimo’s Monastery or St. George’s Castle. Don’t forget about the Gulbenkian Museum either. If you have children tagging along, then you will have to see the Oceanarium, where all types of marine creatures from Antarctic penguins to sharks can be seen. As one of the largest aquariums in the world, the Oceanarium contrasts with the ancient stonework found in the rest of the city and is one of the most advanced facilities you can visit in the Western Mediterranean.

Then, of course, there is unforgettable Italy. The choices available here are so numerous that they can’t all be covered. On the top of your list will usually be Rome, with sites like the Arch of Constantine, the Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Basilica and obviously, the Colosseum. If you have already been to Rome, consider a trip to Florence. Palazzo della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Museum await and since you are so close, why not take a side trip to Pisa where you can see the world renowned Leaning Tower of Pisa?

Now these are just a few options that you can find on any of the western Mediterranean cruises, be sure to research all the great choices and find an itinerary that suits your interests and preferences.
